Abortion is healthcare

This piece represents the effects that changes in abortion policy have had on travel and access to healthcare within different US states. Each block represents one of the fifty states and is color-coded by how restrictive or protective its abortion policies are. (red = most restrictive; medium pink = very restrictive; light pink = restrictive; light green = protective; medium green = very protective; dark green = most protective) The states are organized in alphabetical order (top to bottom, left to right). The black notches account for the number of people who left or entered the state to receive abortion care. Each mark represents 1,000-person increments. Stitches on the inside of the block are “entering” and stitches on the outside of the line are “exiting” the state. Data sourced from the Guttmacher Institute.
